Bristol Young Black Carers' Dartmoor Adventure (February 2011)

Four days of sharing a unique experience & being children again

This opportunity for a group of young carers to go on a 4-day adventure break to Okehampton youth hostel was a rare treat.  These young people rarely experience childhood having sacrificed play with friends after school and at weekends to look after their parents and so an opportunity to play in the woods on low ropes, do archery, take part in night walks through the woods was a great way to not only have fun but to bond with and share their concerns with other people who understand. They travelled on public transport to Okehampton to experience how easy it is to access the countryside.

“I used to think the countryside was pointless but now I want to go more.”

"It's so much fun and going to another countryside is the best idea for me. It's also daring but interesting."

"I learnt that even though I am scared of heights, I can still try things and that your friends are there to help."
